Dallas Stars defenseman Miro Heiskanen is making strides in his recovery from knee surgery, offering a promising outlook for his potential return to the lineup before the playoffs. Stars head coach Pete DeBoer recently provided an encouraging update on Heiskanen’s condition, stating that the Finnish blueliner has resumed skating in Frisco.
Miro Heiskanen’s injury and road to recovery
“He’s (Heiskanen) skating back in Frisco,” Stars head coach Pete DeBoer said of Miro Heiskanen on Saturday, via Stars Thoughts. “And you know, nothing but positive reports. But just started.”
The 24-year-old suffered a knee injury on January 28 during a game against the Vegas Golden Knights after a collision with Mark Stone. Following the incident, Heiskanen underwent surgery on February 4, ruling him out indefinitely. Since then, he has missed 17 straight games while focusing on rehabilitation.
Before the injury, Heiskanen was a key player for the Stars, contributing five goals and 25 points in 50 games while leading the team in ice time (25:10 per game). His return would be a major boost for Dallas as they gear up for the postseason.
While his availability for Game 1 of the first round remains uncertain, DeBoer has not ruled out the possibility of Heiskanen returning later in the playoffs if needed. “That’s a realistic possibility,” DeBoer said on March 19, via NHL.com.
Despite missing their top defenseman, the Dallas Stars have continued to perform at a high level. On Saturday, they secured a decisive 5-1 victory over the Seattle Kraken, officially clinching a playoff berth for the 37th time in franchise history.
Seattle took an early lead when Eeli Tolvanen capitalized on a rebound at 1:27 of the first period. However, Dallas responded strongly, with Jason Robertson netting the equalizer at 11:50. Roope Hintz then gave the Stars a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal late in the first period.
Mason Marchment extended the lead to 3-1 just 28 seconds into the third period, assisted by Matt Duchene. Wyatt Johnston then broke free past Adam Larsson and scored to make it 4-1 at 12:56. Finally, Mikko Rantanen sealed the game with an empty-net goal at 16:26.
“Wyatt Johnston, another big, big goal, making it look easy, so (there are) some good things happening,” DeBoer said after the game, via Reuters.
