Delhi: Flight operations disrupted at IGI Airport by rain and wind; travellers cautioned

New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) Flight operations were hit as strong winds, thunder, lightning and heavy rains lashed Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR). Even though the change in weather brought a welcome relief from the heat that had gripped the region, flight operations were severely impacted.
On the morning of May 2, 2025, Delhi woke up to heavy rainfall and thunderstorms, which led to disruptions in flight operations at Delhi's Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport. Many travellers reported severe delays and diversions as a result of the bad weather, which caused widespread inconvenience across the National Capital Region (NCR).
Delhi was under a red alert from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), which warned of severe thunderstorms and squally winds with maximum speeds of 80 kmph. Winds of up to 78 kmph were recorded in places like Pragati Maidan between 5:30 and 5:50 in the morning. Lajpat Nagar, RK Puram, and Dwarka were among the areas of the city that experienced waterlogging as a result of the severe weather.

Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL), the operator of IGI Airport, confirmed that flight operations were impacted due to the adverse weather. In a statement, DIAL advised passengers to check with their respective airlines for the latest flight updates and assured that on-ground teams were working diligently with all stakeholders to manage the situation.

Delhi Rains

Passengers were also warned about possible delays and diversions by airlines, including Air India. The total flight schedule may be impacted, according to Air India, as several of its flights to and from Delhi are being delayed or diverted. The airline highlighted its efforts to guarantee passenger safety and reduce inconveniences.
The severe weather not only affected flight operations but also led to tragic incidents in the city.

Following the disturbances and waterlogging, Delhi Minister Parvesh Verma visited the impacted regions, including Minto Bridge, where four pumps were busy removing standing water. Verma assured that continuous work is being done by many departments to resolve the issue and guarantee the people' safety.
It is recommended that travellers using IGI Airport be abreast of flight status updates and adjust their travel plans appropriately. Authorities are keeping a close eye on the weather and are trying to quickly return things to normal.
