'Retro' box office collection: Suriya's film emerges as the top 5 Tamil openers of 2025, earns over Rs 5 crore in pre-sales
Suriya’s highly awaited action-romance drama 'Retro', helmed by Karthik Subbaraj, is just hours away from hitting the big screens. With its theatrical release slated for May 1, 2025, the film has generated massive anticipation among fans and the trade. Positioned as one of the most anticipated Kollywood releases of the year, 'Retro' is now set to storm cinemas in less than 24 hours and early signs suggest it could become one of Suriya's best openers.
Strong advance bookings signal a powerful opening
According to Sacnilk, the film has already posted impressive advance bookings, grossing Rs 5.2 crore in pre-sales with nearly 3 lakh tickets sold across 1,400+ shows in Tamil Nadu. The gangster drama is shaping up to be one of the best openings in Suriya’s career in recent times. With a day still left for release, the film is expected to close its pre-sales strongly with over Rs 7 crore. 'Retro' has already broken into the top 5 Tamil openers of 2025, which include 'Good Bad Ugly' (₹29.25 Cr), 'Vidaamuyarchi' (₹27 Cr), 'Dragon' (₹5.4 Cr), and 'Veera Dheera Sooran' (₹3.2 Cr).
Cast, crew & content driving the buzz
Featuring Suriya in the lead, 'Retro' also stars Pooja Hegde, Joju George, and Jayaram, among others. Directed by Karthik Subbaraj, the film blends retro style with intense action and emotional drama. The star power, coupled with Subbaraj’s unique filmmaking touch, has built significant hype. If the storyline connects, it could enjoy strong word of mouth and sustain beyond its opening.
Pan-India release to test its wider reach
Releasing in Tamil, Telugu, and Hindi, 'Retro' also sees good momentum in Kerala and Karnataka. While it will compete with Nani’s 'Hit 3' in Telugu and Ajay Devgn’s 'Raid 2' in Hindi, the film’s performance outside Tamil Nadu will be closely watched. With huge fanfare and box office buzz, all eyes are now on whether 'Retro' can climb to the top of the 2025 charts.
