From sailing the high seas to building one of India’s most successful sauce brands, Viraj Bahl’s journey is a masterclass in grit, passion, and reinvention. A former Merchant Navy officer turned entrepreneur, Viraj risked it all—quitting a high-paying job, losing his restaurant business, and even selling his home—to chase his dream. In an interaction with Humans of Bombay, the Shark Tank India face and founder shared his inspiring entrepreneurial story.
Viraj Bahl’s story began with an unexpected twist—from navigating oceans to exploring flavors. At just 18, he joined the Merchant Navy and spent a decade traveling the world. But despite financial stability, he felt an emotional void. Cooking sparked his soul, and in 2013, he dreamt of being on MasterChef. Ten years later, he fulfilled that vision—appearing on MasterChef India representing his own sauce brand.
With a vision in his heart and savings in hand, Viraj launched a restaurant chain in Delhi in 2009. It was his first entrepreneurial leap and one that demanded relentless dedication. Though driven by passion, he faced a harsh reality—escalating operational costs and high rents made it unsustainable. Just three years later, he was forced to shut it down. But it was only the beginning of a bigger story.
Failure didn’t break Viraj—it reshaped him. Refusing to give up, he and his wife made a life-altering decision: they sold their only house to fund his next business venture. Moving in with their parents, they began again from scratch. With renewed perspective, Viraj dove deep into market research and discovered a gap in the Indian FMCG space—global-quality sauces tailored for Indian consumers.
Out of rock-bottom came a breakthrough. Viraj launched his sauce brand with precision and intent. In the early days, orders were slow and uncertain. But one big order changed it all—followed by tie-ups with food chains that catapulted the brand to national fame. The company soon crossed ₹100 crores in revenue, becoming a pantry staple in Indian homes. What began in struggle, turned into culinary success.
Viraj doesn’t shy away from his failures. He called himself a “failed restaurateur” and embraces the lessons it taught him in an exclusive interaction with Times of India TV. He said, “I mean I can write a book on my failed businesses. I have been a failed restaurateur, I had to shut the entire business, wrap it down. Very tough times but God was really kind of me. At the time when my business was shutting down I did not know God had better plans for me.”
When Viraj’s first business shut down, he felt devastated. But looking back, he sees divine timing in the disaster. He said, “Had my business not shut down, I wouldn’t have started my brand and neither would we have become one of India's largest sauce companies.”
He further said, “So I think failure is a part of life. It is so difficult. Failure is one of your best teachers. I have been on the side of failing and shutting a business. It is the most difficult thing to do, but also as a human being, you need to accept that this is part of life and life happens and you have to move on from it and you just hope that the next thing you're successful or reasonably successful towards.”
